Commemoration of the pogrom night on November 9, 1938

9 November 2024 marks the 86th anniversary of the Reichspogromnacht, when organized Nazi squads set fire to more than a thousand Jewish places of worship in Germany in 1938. Freiburg's synagogue also fell victim to the flames that night.

The state-ordered arsons were the prelude to the systematic persecution of the Jewish population by the Nazi dictatorship, which led to the largest genocide in history.

The City of Freiburg and the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation invite you to a joint commemoration of the persecuted and murdered on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 5.30 pm on the old synagogue square.

Greeting
Ulrich von Kirchbach, First Mayor of the City of Freiburg

Five short statements on the question "What does the pogrom night mean for me today?"
Wilhelm Schwendemann, Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation
Irina Katz, Jewish Community of Freiburg
Ruth Geiss-Friedlander, Egalitarian Chawurah Gescher Freiburg
Chava Gitler, Chabad Lubavitch Freiburg
Thomas Richter, Working Group of Christian Churches in Freiburg

Prayers Kaddish and El Male Rachamim
Cantor Moshe Hayoun, Jewish Community of Freiburg

Immediately before the commemoration ceremony, a memorial walk will take place from 4.30 pm:

Pupils from the Richard-Fehrenbach-Gewerbeschule have prepared stations of a memorial path from the Hebelschule in Stühlinger to the old synagogue square on the day of remembrance of the pogrom night. We will meet at the Hebel School memorial plaque one hour before the start of the central memorial service. On October 22, 1940, hundreds of Jews from southern Germany were imprisoned in the Hebel schoolyard before being deported on trains to the Gurs camp in southwestern France.

Meeting point: Memorial plaque at the Hebelschule, Eschholzstraße entrance
Organization: Gabi Rolland, MdL, and PD Dr. Christian Stahmann
Organizer: Protestant Church in Freiburg
