Freiburg saves Ukrainian art!

On May 4, the Ukrainian Cultural Center Freiburg opens the art exhibition "The Rescued Art". We cordially invite you to the opening vernissage at 17:00. At the vernissage you can talk to Ukrainian artists who have found refuge in Freiburg.

Unfortunately, many Ukrainian artists have been tortured and killed since February 24, 2022. Some of the artists were on the front line, others under occupation, some were killed by an enemy missile in a café or at home. During the occupation, the Russians first of all destroyed everything Ukrainian: from school books to works of art... But the worst thing is that the occupiers kill Ukrainians just because they are bearers of Ukrainian culture. Unfortunately, the war continues...

We thank the city of Freiburg and the region for being one of the saviors of Ukrainian art. The new exhibition shows works by artists from Kharkiv and Kyiv, the two largest cities in Ukraine, which are suffering from the constant Russian bombardment.

After the evacuation, the artists found themselves in a foreign country. Back home, they had to leave everything behind: their houses, their familiar things, their paintings and the life that quickly developed in peaceful Ukraine. But despite the terrible circumstances, they continue their work to symbolize and affirm the triumph of life and hope over destruction.

Each artist reflects reality in their own way: Some immerse themselves in the beauty of nature to psychologically oppose the horror of war, others find an outlet for their creativity in the reflection of tragic images, as if keeping a historical record and making society think.Others reveal the essence of woman as an infinite image of beauty and courage.

Different manifestations of artistic consciousness meet under one sky, the sky of the free city of Fribourg, which unites, inspires and encourages them to continue their journey. For Ukrainians, as for all humanity, the word "freedom" has a sacred meaning. For centuries, mankind has been striving to get closer to "freedom" and has so far found it in art, which is an oasis in the desert of dependencies and traps of various destructive circumstances.

The exhibition shows works that were created in Germany as well as works that were rescued from Ukraine under fire.
Rescued art... but art can also save...

The exhibition will be on display at the Ukrainian Cultural Center from May 4 to June 15.
