Britten and Purcell

Book tickets

The framework of the concert evening is formed by Benjamin Britten's folk songs, which are arranged around his second string quartet. The final movement of the quartet is a chaconne and resembles a bow to this form often used in early English music. It is complemented in the program by pieces by Henry Purcell. The concerto thus also pays homage to the first recording of the 2nd Britten Quartet - on the B side of the LP you can hear Purcell's "Fantasia Upon One Note", in which Britten plays the fifth part on the viola. This recording from 1946 was made by the Zorian Quartet, which consisted of four women - like Phlox.

PHLOX

Phlox, ancient Greek for "shimmer, flame, fire", is a chamber music ensemble founded by cellist Philine Lembeck. The starting point of many concert programs are works from the 19th century. The ensemble's interpretations are given a special sparkle by historical string instruments: Phlox stands for a transparent, warm and colorful sound.

Phlox creates a sizzling atmosphere with its luminous compilation of programs. Contemporary, ancient, modern: The ensemble combines works from different eras and styles, thereby casting them in a new light. Phlox chooses venues such as elegant halls and beautiful concert churches, but can also be found on tennis courts, in overgrown greenhouses, on diving platforms and in empty office buildings.

Ensemble Phlox consists of musicians of different ages and backgrounds. Experienced through their work with ensembles such as the Freiburger Barockorchester, Capella Sollertia, Quatuor Ardeo and Anima Eterna, they condense approaches and perspectives into a lively exchange and a common musical language.
