The sensual world of bookbinding

This course teaches the technical structure of a book and introduces the necessary materials. For your book (e.g. sketchbook, notebook or diary, approx. A5 format), which you make individually, you fold the sheets with the folding bone, stitch the layers into a book block using traditional thread stitching and then cover the hard cover with a self-designed cover paper (e.g. as crease, paste or filler paper). You will also have the opportunity to decorate your book with small accessories, such as the headband and a ribbon marker, and learn interesting facts about the history of paper and its properties, about the development and variety of different historical and modern book binding forms and about different book binding materials. Material costs: €30 (to be settled with the instructor on site)

Course instructor: Natterer, Susanne. The course instructor is a self-employed master bookbinder specializing in binding restoration, repairs, one-off and custom-made products. She teaches at various technical colleges. More at: www.buchbindereinatterer.de
