The "imperial cathedrals of the Rhineland" - lecture on the cathedrals of Mainz, Worms and Speyer
Saturday, 17/06/2023 / Waldhof e.V. - Academy for Continuing Education
The great cathedrals of Mainz, Worms and Speyer are not only relatively close to each other topographically in the northern Upper Rhine area and represent special examples of the history of architecture and vaulting in their Romanesque construction, as so-called Rhenish imperial cathedrals they form a group of buildings with the highest claim to power. This claim, whether as an imperial burial place, as in Speyer and Worms, or as a coronation church, as in Mainz, also played an important role for the reconstructions and changes in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cathedrals are presented individually and in comparison with each other. Questions about today's preservation and the Mainzer Bauhütte, which, along with the Freiburg and 16 others, has been part of UNESCO's Intangible Heritage since the end of 2020, round out the presentation.(Cooperation event of the Freiburg Minster Construction Association).
