The Peloponnese

The Peloponnese, the island of Pelops: a breath of the Golden Age, a remnant of the ancient Arcadia that poets rave about and that can still be enjoyed today. In the land of origin of Greek myths and heroic legends, a palette of colors enchants: Mediterranean azure alternates with the shady olive green of the groves and the radiant marble white of the temples, the bougainvillea pink of the village gardens with the broom gold of the mountain slopes. The peninsula is home to sites of antiquity that the Iliad and the Odyssey sketched out and that Schliemann and co. chased after: the Palace of Nestor, the Cyclopean walls of Tiryns and Mycenae, the massive walls of Acro-Corinth, the sports venues of Olympia and the great amphitheatres of Epidaurus and Messene. A trip across the Peloponnese is a little bit of Byzantium, a little bit of Rome, a little bit of Venice all at the same time, which comes alive in your mind.
