February 1962: Erich Kästner is suffering from tuberculosis and is supposed to recover in the sanatorium on the snow-covered Collina d'Oro, the golden hill above Lake Lugano. But an acute writing crisis, self-doubt and many a demon from the past stand in the way of her recovery. None of this would be bearable without the whisky smuggled into the room and vast quantities of cigarettes - until a charming and clever young lady joins Kästner's dinner party.
