Deniz Utlu: Father's Sea - reading and discussion in the series Ins Freie
Monday, 08/07/2024 / 07:30 PM / Hinterhof - Günterstalstraße 55
"It was summer, it smelled of the sea, I was thirteen years old, my father fell." Deniz Utlu tells the story of a stroke of fate that affects the whole family, of a father-son relationship that ends abruptly, of migration and belonging in "Vaters Meer" (Suhrkamp, 2023): For ten years, Yunus' mother cares for her husband, who can only speak with his eyes after two strokes, before he dies. And Yunus, who has moved out to study, keeps recalling images from his childhood, experiences, conversations: "My father, as the narrator he was, described things as they felt and not necessarily as they happened - that's where I feel close to him, in the telling and the remembering."
A book full of sadness and respect for what you cannot know but must try to learn, according to the SZ: "as a child about his parents, as a narrator about his characters, as a society about the individuals who live in it". Karl-Heinz Ott talks to the author.
