Illusions perdues - Lost Illusions - Xavier Giannoli - F 2021

Lucien is a young, unknown poet in 19th century France. He has great ambitions and wants to rise in the noble society. He leaves his family's print shop in his native province to try his luck in Paris on the arm of his patroness. In the city, the young man is soon on his own, peering behind the scenes of a world dedicated to the law of profit and false appearances. He understands that everything can be bought or sold in Paris, including literary success, the press, politics, and even emotions. Can Lucien stay true to his original hopes and dreams?
