Bach's last great vocal work, a musical legacy
Herdermer Vokalensemble, Vokalensemble am Ulmer Münster, vocal soloists, Herdermer Consort
Conductor: Jens-Martin Ludwig
The Mass in B minor is considered the pinnacle of music history and is also a work of genius. Bach completed the original setting in 1733, including only the Kyrie and Gloria, which corresponded to the conventions of Protestant church music at the time. In the two years before his death in 1750, he expanded what was already a great work into the "great Catholic mass". The setting of the complete Latin mass text now comprised 18 choruses and 9 arias.
Bach's last great vocal work unites all the styles and techniques of his creative output. The human cosmos sounds in his music - from loneliness and despair to joy and bliss.
