Off to Europe. Migration - one of the major challenges of the 21st century

Free entry

Flight, migration and global inequality move Europe - and challenge societies. Migration to Europe is the focus of a reading followed by a discussion on Monday, 26 May at 7.30 pm at the Katholische Akademie Freiburg, Wintererstr. 1. Journalist Bartholomäus Grill has been reporting from African countries for decades and has linked personal experiences with current developments in his book "Afrika! Retrospectives on the Future of a Continent" (2021), he combines personal experiences with current developments. His perspective provides a differentiated view of the challenges posed by climate change, poverty, war and terrorism in many African countries.

In the first part of the event, Grill will read from his book and present key facts on the topic of migration. In doing so, he dispels populist myths and shows the complexity of the topic. In the subsequent discussion, he will join Dr. Franzisca Zanker (ABI University campus Freiburg), Daniela Evers MdL, Dr. Laura Lambert (Leuphana University Lüneburg) and Yahya Sonko (Gambia European Center for Jobs Migration and Development Agency, Stuttgart) to discuss the causes, conditions and prospects of migration as well as return options to African countries.

The event is part of the program series celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Africa Centre for Transregional Research (ACT) at the University of Freiburg and is being held in cooperation with the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute (ABI), the Africa Centre for Transregional Research (ACT) at the University campus Freiburg and the Heinrich Böll Foundation Baden-Württemberg.
