Anton Bruckner - the symphonist of God - on his 200th birthday

Winfried Toll, director of Camerata Vocale Freiburg, has developed a special program around the Mass in D minor in a new arrangement for choir and two pianos for the anniversary concert on Bruckner's 200th birthday. A bold work that draws on symphonic power, Beethoven's example is still palpable. Harmonically, the mass is in the style of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser. Humble supplication is juxtaposed with symphonic sonorities and deep mysticism.

The evening opens with Igor Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms. A similarly bold work and Stravinsky's exciting exploration of religion. The arrangement for two pianos was by none other than Dmitri Shostakovich.

Camerata Vocale Freiburg is a highly respected German chamber choir. Founded in 1977, the choir has been under the direction of Winfried Toll since 1988 and has performed at major festivals and concert series in Germany and abroad (Rheingau Music Festival, Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Solsberg Festival, etc.). Tours have taken the 25 to 40 trained singers to Portugal, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Canada, Brazil, South Korea and neighboring European countries. To date, eight CD productions have been released, which have been enthusiastically reviewed by the press. In 2003, Camerata Vocale Freiburg was awarded the "European Chamber Choir Prize" by the European Cultural Foundation Pro Arte. In the oratorio field, a close collaboration with the Basel Chamber Orchestra has developed, and joint concerts have also been given with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra (under Réne Jacobs), the Basel Sinfonietta and the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
