Portrait series for #OutInChurch - photographs by Martin Niekämper

The portrait series by Cologne-based photographer Martin Niekämper shows 14 queer members of the #OutInChurch association. Sensitive and expressive images show people who live, work and believe in the Catholic Church - and are often confronted with tensions, exclusion and homelessness. The photographs enable an artistic form of "becoming visible", sometimes up close, sometimes from a distance. The exhibition encourages people to think about the perception of queer people in the Catholic Church - and about how the church, according to a member of #OutInChurch, "can become more Christian": for a church without fear.

The exhibition is being held in cooperation with the Institute for Pastoral Education, the Institute for Religious Education and the Women-Men-Gender Department of the Archbishop's Pastoral Care Office in Freiburg.

Admission is free and the exhibition can be visited from September 26 to October 24, 2025 during the opening hours of the Karl Rahner Building.

The Catholic Academy Freiburg and its cooperation partners invite you to the vernissage of the exhibition "GUT.KATHOLISCH.QUEER." with photographs by Martin Niekämper on Thursday, September 25 at 7 pm at the Karl Rahner Building, Habsburgerstraße 107. Swiss theologian and author Elke Pahud de Mortanges will give an introduction, while Freiburg guitarist Alexander Lehner will provide the musical accompaniment to the vernissage.
